At the time of their largest population, Catawba people numbered 10,000, but by 1826 their total population had dropped to 110. By 1759 half the Catawba tribe had died from smallpox, which was endemic among European colonists, because the Catawba had not acquired immunity to the new disease. The Catawba Native Americans were the first known historic tribe to settle Mecklenburg County (in the Charlotte area) and were first recorded around 1567 in Spanish records. Queen Charlotte of Great Britain and Ireland Lake Wylie and Mountain Island Lake are two smaller man-made lakes located near the city. The city is the cultural, economic, and transportation center of the Charlotte metropolitan area, whose 2020 population of 2,660,329 ranked 23rd in the U.S. The population was 874,579 as of the 2020 census, making Charlotte the 16th-most populous city in the U.S., the seventh most populous city in the South, and the second most populous city in the Southeast behind Jacksonville, Florida. Located in the Piedmont region, it is the county seat of Mecklenburg County. In 2020, McClatchy transitioned to private ownership when it was acquired by Chatham Asset Management. The Charlotte Observer staff has won four Pulitzer Prizes, including two Gold Medals for Public Service. The paper tackles controversial economic and social issues and is innovative in creating new products such as the niche site, Charlotte Five, a publication serving young adults interested in nightlife, local development, culture, and causes that are important to them. The Observer heavily covers development and schools-factors strongly affected by rampant growth in the city and the region-and continues deep coverage of the area's traditional interests: banking, business, industry, religion, and stock-car racing. The Charlotte Observer has continued throughout its years of service to Charlotte and the surrounding communities, to accurately reflect the region and what matters to the local residents.
